We had an extremely busy schedule with fundraising in BC and Alberta, but were able to spend 2 months with our oldest daughter Chelsey, husband Mark, and the 2 dogs. It was a race to the finish to get everything accomplished before we could leave for Mexico on the 28th of October. One week before the deadline we were given a school bus by Amigo Ministries (Dennis Scrabba), and many things to bring down with us. We needed an extra driver, so our friend Guillermo Vargas came along with us, and we enjoyed his company ver much The road was long and seemingly never ending! However, 4 days later, 2 attempts at crossing the Mexico border, lots of help from veteran Missionaries in San Felipe John & Bonnie Gilbert, and we were in! That 4th day was a trial x 100 for all of us, but God was faithful as always! Thank you also to Paul & Donna Korneliussen for leading us home to San Felipe in the dark. Finally, we’ve arrived! The big yellow bus, all the stuff, a 4 day drive, and we’re on our way!Gary & Guillermo outside of Las Vegas, NVSunset in San FelipeBiking and diggin’ holes behind our houseThe Heinrichs in Mexico

What has this first month been like for us? We have moved twice, and are now settled in our place for this year. A big thank you to our property managers for being such great help to us in the first month! In the months ahead we will need to purchase furniture and beds, or continue renting a furnished house. We need to be on the look out for the right place, so we can accommodate our vehicles, and the bus. So far, we have been able to visit 5 different local churches, and are getting to know some of the pastors and families. Everyone has been very helpful, and very nice to us. We enjoy the services in Spanish, but singing without words is still a stretch! Joshua and Nic have joined a community track team, and so are running each week on Mon., Wed. and Fri. afternoon. It has been a great way for them to be with other kids their own age, and also gets them out of the house. We were able to use the bus to take the whole team to Mexicali for a Turkey Trot race, and the team brought home 7 turkeys total. It was an early morning getting up and leaving at 4 am, but everyone was ready to run at 8. They are also playing baseball with one of the local pastors and kids from San Felipe on Saturday mornings, and soccer. No one believes us that they are just 12 and 13 because they are so tall! We have to prove their ages with their birth certificates! The online school is always challenging, but we are starting to get the hang of it, and each week is better. The boys are looking forward to a break soon over Christmas. One of our favorite events was helping with a turkey dinner put on by several ministries here in San Felipe at John & Bonnie Gilbert’s compound 99+1 Ministries. Gary was able to take the bus to a couple different locations in town to pick up the local senior citizens for the free dinner. Kathy helped serve the food, and Josh and Nic helped with setting up tables and etc. It was a good day to get to know others from different groups in town, and to participate in blessing others. Last but not least, we attended the open house for Sonshine Hacienda Orphanage. Many of you know that we helped to build at different times with missions teams, and also sent funds. The facility is almost complete and ready for children. Congratulations to the Lewis’ for a job well done! So, it is 2 days before Christmas, and the new year is just around the corner. We are so thankful for God’s provision, his faithfulness and his love that has surrounded us daily throughout 2011. May you be blessed as we celebrate our Saviour’s birth! Gary & Kathy

Thank you & Merry Christmas

We would like to say Thank you to all who have supported us financially and prayerfully this past year. We thought language school was difficult, but the past 40 days have been quite a feat! We feel like our theme song is “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Jonny Cash! The honest truth is we left a part of ourselves in San Jose, and we miss the school, our teachers and friends. However, on our iteneration/fundraising journey, we’ve seen family we have not seen in years, met with new and supporting congregations and Pastors. Are we tired....Yes! Has God been faithful....Yes and Always! Are we happy....Yes! It has been great to be back for a while with Mark and Chesley in Edmonton, and it was our privilege to attend orientation with Paige at Summit Pacific Bible College in Abbotsford. Are we challenged...Yes! 6 people, 2 dogs, 2 hide-a-beds, a new online school program for Josh & Nic, cleaning out our storage unit, and visiting churches until the end of October. (read more on next page)Goodbye Costa Rica.....Hello US and Canada!Nic and JoshChelsey, Paige, Nic and Joshthe heinrichsGraduation August 12th in Costa RicaFamily Photo
Josh, Matt, Paige, Mark, Chelsey, Gary, Nic & Kathy

Since being back in Alberta we have been challenged with many things including the chilly Fall weather. That’s what happens when you live in the tropics for a year, and we are slowly adjusting.
With our many trips here and there, we have also been fortunate to witness the harvest time in Alberta...literally. Field after field of wheat and barley are being harvested, and the farmers don’t stop until the job is done. This reminds us of the passage of scripture in Luke 10:2, He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field”. We are ready to head to our harvest field...Mexico. We have studied the Spanish language, we can carry on a conversation, but the more time we spend in Canada not using the language every day, the more we forget! Our challenge now is to finish raising the budget, so that we can get our things into the U-Haul by the end of October, drive to our new country of service, and home. We feel very fortunate the the Lord has provided a furnished rental house for us in San Felipe, and all we have to do is move in. We truly praise the Lord for His faithful provisions, His goodness, and His perfect timing in each and every phase of this Missions Journey! Thank you all for your financial and prayerful support....we appreciate it very much! The past couple of weeks we have been able to begin making arrangements for our time in the US and Canada directly after we graduate. We have about 6 weeks of school left now, with graduation date set at August 12th. There is still much to learn and use in the Spanish language, but we now have a good foundation, and can communicate with Spanish speakers. There are many Bible Studies, projects and exams coming in the next month, so we know that we have to keep pushing and working right to the end! We have really come to love Costa Rica, and know that we will miss our classmates and our Tico friends very much! It really feels strange to know that we may never see each other again....... Goodbye is NEVER fun!Wrapping things up in Costa Rica!In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:6¡Buenos Díás!6th Grade family lunchNic’s Graduationthe heinrichs

La Casa de mujeresGary with the WomenOur good friend RitaKathy with the WomenHappy to be living for Jesus Recently, we have had the opportunity to minister together in a house for women that are being rehabilitated from drugs, abuse, etc. They are offered Bible Studies, instruction for clean living, and more, in a 6 mo. or 1 year program. Our good friend Rita introduced us to the program and the women, so we go each Thursday afternoon to have a Bible Study with them. They are all very attentive, have questions, and are learning to renew their thinking. Most of them come from very difficult circumstances, and have made a conscious decision to live for God. In return, we get excellent practice... all in Spanish, but really we get much more than that! While Gary was telling about his life, one of the women was quite moved by what he was saying. We found out later that she had been released from prison and in the house with the women for just two days. She is Nicaraguan, was raped when she was 14, and sent to prison for killing her attacker. She spent 24 years in the women's prison here, during which time she went through cancer of the lung, and the removal of one breast due to the cancer. Amazingly difficult story, as were the rest of the stories of the other women.
How can we help in the 6 weeks we have left? It’s interesting how our view has changed this past week. In our limited use of Spanish, we are now able to communicate, understand, offer to others a listening ear, or a word of encouragement, and be available for God to use us in whatever way he puts in front of us. It is more than getting a high mark on a grammar test in language school! How easy it is to loose sight of our main goal....people...the people of Latin America! So, much to do in a short time, and all of this is easier with your prayer support.
After graduation on the 12th, our flight out of the country will be the 13th into Denver, CO, where my parents will meet us with our truck that they’ve been storing at their house this past year. How strange it will be to drive once again after walking or busing everywhere for one entire year! We will welcome the change! After a time of intenerating and visiting our supporters, we will make our way back to Alberta to spend time with Chelsey, Mark and Paige. They have all been such a great help to us as we try to maintain lives here in Costa Rica, and in Alberta also! Paige is enrolled at Summit Pacific Bible College, and will begin in September, so we will all get to see her off. We all have great memories of living on campus when it was Western, and of Gary attending there! We look forward to visiting supporters and churches in BC during this time.
We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all who have prayed for us, and given financially during this past year! We look forward to seeing you all, and may the Lord continue to bless you as you invest in the lives of others!
Gary & Kathy

The boys are officially finished with school, which they are quite excited about! They love not having to get up and ready for school! One of the highlights of this trimester was that Nic graduated from Grade 6 at Sojourn Academy. There was a very nice celebration for both the Kindergarten and Grade 6 classes. There were 7 students in Nic’s class, and so there will be many changes ahead for them all. We have enrolled both Josh & Nic in an Intensive Spanish Course for the month of July, partly for the increased knowledge of the language, and partly so they won’t get too bored! It’s hard to grasp the concept of summer vacation when we’ve been in summer all year! Our boys have been blessed with a wonderful experience that most kids will never know.
Thank you to those who have sent emails, letters, and cards of encouragement to us....we appreciate it more than you know!
Prayer Requests:

•	That we will finish well at language school.
•	Kathy has been having problems with her hands/wrists/arms/elbows with all the typing of projects, emails, newsletters and etc.
•	Emotionally as we say goodbye and transition again.
We just officially passed the 6 month mark at ILE, and from this point on, we have 6 more months to go before returning to the States and Canada. Wow, it is amazing how fast the time flies when we are busy! We are almost half way through our second trimester. Looking back, we have learned so much, and looking forward in our text books, we have SO much more to try to learn!
Try is the key word here! To try our best, and to give ourselves at this moment to learn the language. We have had the opportunity twice in the past couple of weeks, to hear God speaking loud and clear to us about why we are here in Costa Rica. Once through our Maestra Capilla (our teachers were in charge of Chapel that Tuesday morning), and at the Sunday evening service at Cincel (Pentecostal language school close by). We are here learning Spanish, but we are here for much more....to grow in trusting the Lord in every area of our life, to learn the culture of a people group that we love, to learn to get along with those of different organizations that love Jesus, and the hardest....to be humbled!
I remember the first week we all arrived. We were wearing our organization or mission like a flag, and were all somewhat puffed up about it. Now we all are just trying to get this language one day at a time, and only with God’s help are we managing the task!
One of my teachers told me recently that when she first started teaching in this school, with people who were all missionaries, she thought they would all be on a higher spiritual level than anyone else, have no problems with their marriage, or their children. Then she leaned right away that we are all just people here....people who have problems, people who need Jesus every day, andwithout Him we can do nothing! So, we get up each week day morning, and head to the school for another day of learning. We are truly thankful for this opportunity to be here! Language is difficult...on paper it is easier, but having the courage to speak and be corrected is humbling. The more we do it, the faster we learn! We are also thankful for the kind hearted Tico’s here that are patient with us, who pray for us daily, and are truly Gods instruments for our learning!
He alone is our rock and our salvation!
Kathy

It is summer here in San Jose....nice warm days with a little wind to cool things off!
We are so enjoying the weather here in Costa Rica! Yesterday it was 28C (82F) and almost no rain for weeks now. The local kids here all started back to school in February, after their twomonth break, and it was very strange for us to see backpacks, school uniforms, and school supplies on sale for the new school year. We really have to remind ourselves that it is winter in Canada and in the US. The boys miss their friends, and winter activities like sledding and skating, but honestly, Gary and I can’t say we miss the snow and cold!!
Since the last newsletter, three of our children have completed another year...Chelsey turned 21, Paige 19, and Joshua 13. Seems impossible! Josh has grown so much the past year. So much so that he does not look 13....our new neighbor thought he looked old enough to drive! Maybe in Alberta! Nic is almost as tall as me also, and that makes him excited!
With the weather being nicer now, we try to spend more time outside at the parks nearby. It is good for the boys for wearing off energy, and we get to practice our Spanish with the locals.
Thank you again to all who have partnered with us financially and in prayer!
Gary, Kathy, Josh and Nic

•	• •
PROJECT JEEP
We are beginning to raise $7000 for a vehicle in Mexico.
